About Us
Respiratory Matters was founded in 2011 and has provided training and education to hundreds of health care professionals throughout the UK.
In 2016 we were awarded the Quality Assurance Certificate from Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber.
Our mission is to improve the care and outcomes of people with respiratory disease through evidence-based, practical, high-quality education.
Our courses are accredited by the CPD certification service. Accredited CPD training means the learning activity has reached the required Continuing Professional Development standards and benchmarks. The learning value has been scrutinised to ensure integrity and quality. The CPD Certification Service provides recognised independent CPD accreditation compatible with global CPD requirements.
We have been commissioned to deliver our courses nationally and also regularly run them at our training centre in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. There is also the option to complete our courses purely online, through our virtual learning environment (VLE), with ZOOM tutorial support.
We offer free mentorship for people who have completed our spirometry courses who wish to take the ARTP competency assessments to then be placed on the National Spirometry Register.
In addition to education, we frequently work with NHS leading on local respiratory projects. We are also involved in respiratory research and digital innovation.
Sophie Toor RGN, MSc, is the founder and Clinical Director of Respiratory Matters. In 2009 her daughter was diagnosed with asthma and spent much of her younger years in hospital. At the same time her grandfather also developed COPD and from these experiences grew her passion in respiratory disease and her vision to provide education and resources to create a positive impact to the lives of people with respiratory disease, their families and to the health care professionals looking after them.
Within her role as Clinical Director, Sophie still works as a respiratory nurse specialist. She heads several respiratory nurse interest groups, sits on advisory boards, works in research, and has led local and regional respiratory projects. She writes and produces educational material to support the management of people with asthma and COPD and has lectured at Huddersfield and Keele Universities. She was a panel assessor for the National review of asthma deaths in 2012 and sat on the evidence review group for the BTS/SIGN update in 2016. She is also an ARTP assessor.
